Representatives are currently gathered in The Hague, Netherlands, for the Interparlementair Koninkrijksoverleg (IPKO). The meetings center on strengthening cooperation between the countries of the Dutch Kingdom and the public bodies of the Caribbean Netherlands, specifically Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius.
Anoushka Biekman, President of Kingdom Relations, described the IPKO as a venue where parties can sit together to discuss issues and find common solutions. The objective is to establish effective collaboration that delivers real benefits to citizens. The meetings are utilizing a new working model proposed by Sint Maarten parliamentarian Sarah Westcott-Williams, which focuses on one main topic and two sub-topics to ensure dialogue is action-oriented.
Biekman clarified that while she presides over the meetings, she is not responsible for the specific content. She emphasized the ongoing role of parliamentary commissions in keeping Kingdom perspectives relevant in areas such as Social Affairs, Foreign Affairs, and Infrastructure.
Comparing the Kingdom to a family, Biekman noted that there are always good and challenging moments, but maintaining contact is essential. Ultimately, the future of the Kingdom is measured by how residents in Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, the Netherlands, Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius experience the results of this cooperation in their daily lives.
