ORANJESTAD (AAN) – On Thursday evening, a dialogue and reflection session was held at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where Aruba’s Prime Minister Mike Eman shared his vision for the future of the Dutch Kingdom and emphasized the importance of building a modern, balanced cooperation based on shared values.
The event brought together academics, students, and other interested parties to discuss philosophy, governance, and the relationships among countries within the Kingdom. It was organized by the university’s Master’s program in Philosophy, Culture, and Governance in collaboration with the platform “De Nieuwe Wereld.”
Ad Verbrugge, social and cultural philosophy lecturer and program coordinator, noted that the evening focused on open discussions about the Kingdom’s future. “Mike Eman shared his vision, based on shared history and addressing the challenges and opportunities Aruba and the Netherlands face in a rapidly changing world,” Verbrugge explained.
During the event, former Minister of Justice and Security Ernst Hirsch Ballin highlighted the concept of the “common good,” an idea rooted in Christian democratic tradition. Various speakers, including Govert Buijs and Dr. Jelle van Baardewijk, contributed reflections and questions regarding governance, identity, and the Kingdom’s future. The session concluded with an interactive discussion in which students and speakers actively participated.
Justin Quandus, a cultural anthropology student, described the session as highly engaging and insightful. “It helped me understand how people think about Kingdom institutions and how dialogue contributes to a better shared future,” he said, noting Aruba and the Netherlands share a long history that has shaped cultural and societal development.
The AVP-Futuro Cabinet emphasized that this type of academic and social dialogue should continue, as knowledge exchange fosters mutual understanding and strengthens relationships among countries in the Dutch Kingdom.
