ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba’s Ministry of Education is organizing consultations with primary school teachers to evaluate and strengthen multilingual education programs across the island.
The meetings focus on curriculum expansion, educational materials, and professional training related to multilingual teaching, including Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish.
Officials stated that curriculum changes introduced in 2024 made Papiamento the primary language used for children learning to read and write in early grades, while Dutch instruction was adapted to better support students who do not grow up speaking Dutch at home.
Education Minister Gerlien Croes commissioned a preliminary evaluation regarding the implementation of the multilingual education changes to determine the best approach for future development.
Teachers reportedly indicated the need for additional support, improved educational materials, and further professional development opportunities connected to multilingual teaching methods.
Authorities explained that English and Spanish also remain important components of Aruba’s educational system and should continue receiving proper attention within the school curriculum.
Based on the evaluation results and recommendations, the Ministry of Education developed a new program focused on strengthening multilingual education in Aruba.
The ministry will hold consultation sessions on May 26, 27, and 28 to allow teachers to provide feedback regarding the proposed plans and recommendations.
Officials confirmed that Dutch financial assistance will support future investments in educational materials and curriculum development.
Minister Croes emphasized that the goal remains creating an inclusive educational system where students can develop strong language skills while learning through the languages they understand best.
