The FLP Papiamento recognition Aruba campaign continues as Fundacion Lanta Papiamento (FLP) commemorated the 23rd anniversary of Papiamento becoming an official language in Aruba.
During the event, FLP acknowledged progress made since the official recognition of Papiamento in 2003, particularly within the education system where the language is now a mandatory subject and used as the primary literacy language in elementary schools.
However, the organization stated that important challenges remain regarding the full recognition and use of Papiamento in Aruba and within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
According to FLP, the continued dominance of Dutch within the educational system places mother-tongue education at a disadvantage and negatively impacts Aruban students. The foundation also expressed concern about the growing influence of English in media, commerce, and social media, warning that it may contribute to the weakening of proper Papiamento usage.
As part of the FLP Papiamento recognition Aruba efforts, the organization announced the upcoming cultural event “Papiamento den Hofi,” scheduled for May 27 at Arubiana.
The event will feature poetry, music, storytelling, and discussions aimed at promoting and preserving the Papiamento language and cultural identity in Aruba.
