Wever-Croes Meets Dutch Premier on HOFA Law

MEP leader Evelyn Wever-Croes recently met with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten at the VNO to discuss the contentious proposed ‘HOFA’ Kingdom Law. The meeting, also attended by faction leaders and the Parliament President, served as a platform for Wever-Croes to formally reiterate her party’s strong opposition to the legislation.

Wever-Croes articulated that the law poses a threat to Aruba’s autonomy and violates the island’s constitution. She emphasized that the measures conflict with agreements reached with the Netherlands in 2024 and insisted that the intervention is unnecessary. Responding to these concerns, Prime Minister Jetten acknowledged Aruba’s stance. He revealed that the Dutch government is currently awaiting advice from the Raad van State, expected around mid-June, before deciding whether to proceed.

During the discussion, Jetten urged the Aruban Parliament to bring the issue to a debate and finalize a position, noting that the matter cannot be delayed indefinitely. Wever-Croes expressed hope that the Netherlands will respect the advice of the Raad van State. She referenced her positive working relationship with Jetten, citing their collaboration on the 2023 Caribbean Energy Conference and the 54 million euro growth fund. The MEP leader called on the President of Parliament to schedule the debate requested earlier this year to allow the legislature to take a definitive stand.
