Local artist Maria Kelly has donated a permanent mosaic art collection to the Dr. Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH). Titled “Bunita bida di un barbulet,” the colorful visual artwork is now on display at the hospital’s main entrance.
The collection features intricate mosaic designs inspired by nature, specifically hummingbirds moving between flowers. Kelly, who began studying mosaics in 2015, created the pieces using recyclable materials. She decided to donate the work as she prepares to move, ensuring the art remains accessible to the community rather than appearing in a temporary exhibition. The installation is clearly visible from the outside, inviting admiration from passersby.
Jacco Vroegop, representing the hospital’s Board of Directors, expressed gratitude for the contribution. He emphasized that HOH aims to be more than just a medical facility, striving to create a sense of home and tranquility for patients and staff. Vroegop noted that art plays a crucial role in supporting mental well-being and fostering human connection within the healthcare environment.
Kelly credited the realization of this project to years of saving and patience to invest in materials for her hobby following retirement. She also thanked her friend and former HOH employee, Virginia Tromp, for her assistance in facilitating the donation. The hospital management welcomes the installation as a vibrant and inspiring addition to the facility.
