ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has expressed strong support for Aruba’s decision to redevelop the refinery site, describing the move as a “wise and brave” step toward the island’s future. Speaking at a press conference at the airport at the conclusion of his visit, Jetten emphasized that repurposing the area offers significant opportunities for new economic development.
According to Jetten, the redevelopment could facilitate the construction of homes and other vital infrastructure projects. He revealed that several Dutch companies have already shown interest in collaborating with the Aruban government. “Leaving the area as it is now is a waste,” Jetten remarked, adding that despite high initial investments, the project promises substantial social and economic benefits.
The Dutch Prime Minister noted that before construction begins, thorough investigations into soil contamination and environmental remediation are required. He suggested that the Netherlands’ extensive experience with large-scale industrial site clean-ups could be beneficial to Aruba. Furthermore, Jetten stated that while the Netherlands is willing to assist, Aruba has not yet made a formal request for financial aid, a stance he attributed to the island’s proud and independent mindset.
