The Aruba Oil Opportunity Discussion has gained momentum following a parliamentary meeting where members debated whether the island should reconsider possibilities in the oil sector.
The meeting was urgently requested by the MEP faction, which expressed concern that it took nearly three months for the discussion to be scheduled. According to the opposition, Aruba must at least evaluate new opportunities arising from recent geopolitical changes, particularly developments in Venezuela.
The Aruba Oil Opportunity Discussion focuses on whether the island should revisit the potential use of the former refinery in San Nicolas. Historically, Aruba played a major role in global oil refining, but in recent years, the government has shifted toward a sustainable and clean energy strategy.
Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes acknowledged that she previously believed the refinery chapter was closed due to repeated failed attempts to restart operations. However, she noted that recent changes have opened the door to new possibilities.
“As long as it is a refinery that complies with environmental standards, creates jobs, and supports economic development for Aruba—especially San Nicolas—we must at least explore the opportunity,” she stated.
