The National Library of Aruba recently received a book about the tradition of using plants for medicinal purposes in the ABC Islands. The book, titled “A Practical Guide to Medicinal Plants of the Caribbean for Primary Health Care,” was published in Papiamento by the TRAMIL Organization.
This guide offers accessible information on 38 common medicinal plant species in the Caribbean, their application in primary health care, and safe usage practices. The publication is based on scientific research and regional experience and is part of an effort to make traditional knowledge more accessible and responsible for community use. The book includes practical information on plant usage, preparation, and safety guidelines.
Biologist John de Freitas presented the book to the Deputy Head of the National Library of Aruba, Mrs. Lilian Semeleer.
TRAMIL (Traditional Medicine for the Islands), an active Caribbean network since 1982, focuses on promoting and documenting traditional medicine in the region. TRAMIL validates the use of medicinal plants through a scientific validation process, supported by surveys conducted in various Caribbean countries and scientific institutions in the region and South America.
