ORANJESTAD (AAN): On December 20, 2025, Minister Wendrick Cicilia held a meeting with 14 representatives of Aruba’s fishing community, accompanied by three advisors from his ministry, to discuss maritime safety, regional developments, and specific initiatives for the sector.

During the meeting, fishermen were informed about increased security activities in the region due to the presence of nearby military forces. Emphasis was placed on vigilance at sea and maintaining proper communication channels, including coordination through the Aruba Ports Authority (APA). Authorities also confirmed that a new safety session would be offered by the Coast Guard and Directie Scheepvaart, covering general maritime safety and basic VHF marine radio communication.

The meeting also addressed the Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) pilot project, highlighting proper use, maintenance, and responsible training. FADs must be placed at a depth of 600 feet or more, and an anonymous registration system will track collected data, ensuring ongoing funding and project sustainability.

Additionally, the potential introduction of an assistance tariff was discussed, with details under review. Minister Cicilia also confirmed the approval of a decompression chamber, to be operated by a certified specialist and scheduled for operation at Horacio Oduber Hospital by July 2026.

Minister Cicilia stated: “Our fishermen operate in an environment that demands constant attention to safety, communication, and preparedness. Through cooperation, training, and responsible practices, we strengthen the sector and ensure that those going to sea daily can do so with confidence and sustainability.”

The government reaffirmed its commitment to continuous dialogue with the fishing community and to improving laws to ensure safety, sustainability, and resilience in the sector.
