Prime Minister Mike Eman Presents Rijkswet Dispute Regulation

VIEWS

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Mike Eman, the Government of Aruba has achieved a historic milestone in strengthening cooperation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

For the first time, Aruba officially presented the Rijkswet Geschillenregeling (Dispute Regulation Kingdom Law) to the Kingdom Council of Ministers, acting as the initiator on behalf of Parliament.

This law represents a fundamental step long requested by Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten to create a fair and objective mechanism for handling disputes regarding the interpretation of the Kingdom Charter. Until now, disputes were limited to appeals within the Kingdom Council of Ministers, a process that often did not reflect the islands’ legitimate positions.

With this new proposal, disputes can be reviewed by the Council of State (Raad van State), a respected and independent judicial body. This ensures impartial decisions based on fairness and respect, strengthening trust and cooperation across the Kingdom.

Prime Minister Eman highlighted that many scholars have described relations within the Kingdom as “strained ties” caused by differences in interpreting the Charter. The ability to submit disputes to the Council of State marks a sign of political and institutional maturity, building a Kingdom founded on stability, clarity, and justice.

The presentation of the Rijkswet Geschillenregeling is not only a major achievement for Aruba but also a strategic step for all the islands within the Kingdom. It reflects Aruba’s commitment to constructive solutions and to shaping a Kingdom built on mutual respect, shared values, and a sustainable democratic future.
