Oranjestad City Center Revitalization Taskforce Activated
The Government of Aruba has activated an interministerial taskforce dedicated to the Oranjestad city center revitalization, focusing on transforming abandoned spaces into safe and functional areas for the community.
A press meeting was held at the former Music Box building on Elleboogstraat to outline progress and next steps. The taskforce, titled “Convivencia: Safe and Humane City Centers,” was established by ministerial decree as part of the 2025-2028 policy implementation. Its primary objective is to strengthen security, tourism quality, and livability in Oranjestad and San Nicolas through an integrated strategy.
Multi-Agency Collaboration
Several agencies are involved in the initiative, including the Department of Nature and Environment (DNM), Bureau City Inspector, Department of Public Works (DOW), and the Aruba Police Corps. The taskforce will coordinate social, preventive, and security actions while collaborating with external partners such as social organizations and the private sector.
The transformation of the Music Box building serves as a symbol of the Oranjestad city center revitalization efforts. Once a popular venue for reggae and roots music, the building had fallen into disrepair and became a neighborhood concern. The government views the project as part of a continuous process aimed at creating a safer and more attractive city center that respects the island’s history.
