BES Islands Delegation Arrives in Aruba, Seeks Official Support for Their Struggles

The delegation from the BES Islands—Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba—arrived in Aruba seeking support for their ongoing struggles with the Dutch government. The islands have been facing challenges related to changes in Dutch legislation, particularly the WOLBES and FINBES laws, which the islands feel were imposed without proper consultation. The delegation aims to garner backing from Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten, especially in light of the upcoming IPKO meeting, where these territories and the Netherlands will discuss important issues.

Although the delegation visited Aruba to present their case and seek support, they were disappointed to learn that, aside from verbal support from some members of the governing parties, they had not received any official backing in writing from the AVP (Aruban People’s Party) or Futuro. They did, however, receive official backing from the MEP (People’s Electoral Movement) and PPA (People’s Party Aruba).

The BES Islands believe that the Dutch government’s actions are unacceptable and are pushing for their voices to be heard in the upcoming IPKO meetings. Aruba’s parliament was expected to host a public meeting, but this did not take place, and the delegation expressed their concerns over the lack of transparency and public participation in the process.
