Aruba Must Also Adopt a 4-Day Work Week Instead of 5

During the discussion of the minimum wage increase law, MEP leader Evelyn Wever-Croes presented a motion to change the workweek from 5 days to 4 days. This was a significant point in the MEP’s electoral campaign, and the motion was approved by the entire Parliament.

“Several countries have already conducted successful pilot projects, including the Netherlands, which showed that a shorter workweek results in greater productivity, higher job satisfaction, and a better work-life balance. I believe Aruba can learn from these experiences and modernize its labor structure,” said Evelyn Wever-Croes during her speech.

She elaborated on the multiple benefits, noting that a better work-life balance gives workers more time for family, health, and personal growth.

International research shows that employees who work fewer days per week are more efficient and productive in less time. Another benefit is reduced absenteeism and stress, as workers have more time to rest, which in turn reduces sick leave related to stress.

This change would also make the labor market more attractive. Aruba would become more competitive in attracting and retaining talent, particularly among young professionals and those returning from abroad.

“We have asked the government to set an example: If the public sector adopts this approach, the government will set a positive tone for the entire society. We have requested the government to conduct the necessary studies and inform Parliament within 3 months on whether this significant change can be implemented. I am very pleased that Parliament has approved this important motion. During our campaign, we promised to introduce a shorter workweek, and from the opposition, we will continue to fight for this change. Governing from the opposition,” Evelyn Wever-Croes concluded.
