ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Two Bonaire Earthquakes were recorded offshore on Sunday, August 2, 2026, slightly more than three hours apart.

The first and larger earthquake had a reported magnitude of 4.1 and occurred northeast of Bonaire. The second, a much smaller magnitude 1.9 event, was recorded south of the island.

The report did not mention injuries, property damage, noticeable shaking or a tsunami warning connected to either earthquake.

First Earthquake Recorded Northeast of Rincon

The first earthquake was recorded at approximately 4:36 a.m.

Its epicentre was reported at:

  • Latitude: 12.73° north;
  • Longitude: 66.56° west;
  • Magnitude: 4.1;
  • Depth: Less than 30 kilometres;
  • Location: Approximately 198 kilometres north-northeast of Rincon, Bonaire.

Because the epicentre was located far offshore, the report did not establish whether residents on Bonaire, Aruba, Curaçao or nearby coastal areas felt any shaking.

A magnitude alone does not determine how an earthquake will be experienced. Distance from populated areas, depth beneath the surface and local geological conditions also influence whether people feel movement and whether damage is possible.

Second Earthquake Occurred South of Bonaire

The second earthquake was recorded at approximately 7:47 a.m., three hours and 11 minutes after the first event.

Its reported details were:

  • Latitude: 11.80° north;
  • Longitude: 68.19° west;
  • Magnitude: 1.9;
  • Depth: Five kilometres;
  • Location: Approximately 25 kilometres south of Willemstoren, at Bonaire’s southern end.

An earthquake measuring 1.9 is very small and would ordinarily be detected by sensitive seismic instruments rather than noticed by most residents.

Events Were Recorded in Different Locations

Although the earthquakes occurred on the same morning, their reported epicentres were in significantly different locations.

The magnitude 4.1 event occurred far northeast of Rincon, while the magnitude 1.9 event was close to the waters south of Bonaire.

Based on the supplied coordinates, the epicentres were roughly 200 kilometres apart. The report does not provide scientific evidence establishing that the second earthquake was an aftershock or otherwise directly related to the first.

Confirmation of a relationship would require analysis by a recognised seismic-monitoring agency.

No Impact Information Announced

No reports of injuries, structural damage or service interruptions were included in the announcement.

There was also no indication that emergency procedures were activated on Bonaire.

A small offshore event may pass unnoticed, particularly when its epicentre is distant from populated areas. Residents who experience noticeable shaking should nevertheless follow information released by local authorities and recognised seismic organisations.

Regional Seismic Activity Draws Interest

Earthquakes occurring near Bonaire attract attention across the Dutch Caribbean because Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are geographically close to northern South America and surrounding seismic zones.

However, the recording of an earthquake does not automatically indicate that a larger event will follow.

The two Bonaire Earthquakes recorded on August 2 consisted of one offshore magnitude 4.1 event northeast of the island and a much smaller magnitude 1.9 event south of Willemstoren.

Further official information would be needed to confirm whether either earthquake was felt and whether seismic specialists consider the events connected.
