Parliamentarian Hendrik Tevreden recently stated that Aruba can no longer rely solely on tourism for its economic survival. Addressing the need for a more solid foundation to sustain the future, Tevreden highlighted the vulnerability of an economy dependent on a single industry. He argued that while tourism employs thousands of families directly and indirectly, the country must recognize the risks involved.
According to Tevreden, the COVID-19 crisis provided a clear view of this reality, bringing the economy to a halt within weeks. He noted that despite the formation of a new government, there has not been enough serious discussion regarding economic diversification. While the Minister of Economy speaks of agriculture, Tevreden stated that it is not on a scale to greatly impact GDP.
The Parliamentarian emphasized that Aruba must utilize its unique geographic position near South America and major energy reserves. He argued that the discussion should not be limited to “tourism versus oil,” but should focus on creating more economic activity and strategic positioning.
