Investigating Judge to Decide Today

The fatal traffic accident that occurred late Sunday night near the exit of the Renaissance Mall on Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard continues to be a major topic of discussion across Aruba.

A young female driver, identified by the initials C.F., only 24 years old, had reportedly just left an establishment near Linear Park close to Plaza Turismo. Witnesses state that she was heavily intoxicated and drove at high speed in a westbound direction.

According to preliminary information, the driver accelerated onto the section commonly known as the “Sonesta Bridge” at an estimated speed of over 100 km/h. While descending, she violently struck a couple who were crossing the road toward the mall. Two other couples were walking approximately one meter ahead and narrowly escaped being hit.

The female victim was thrown approximately 20 meters forward. The male victim was dragged onto the hood of the vehicle, which shattered on impact, before he was thrown off near the former Customs building.

Thanks to eyewitness accounts and high-definition security camera footage, authorities were able to quickly identify the black Jeep Grand Cherokee involved. Police located the vehicle shortly afterward at a residential complex in Bushiri, on the road toward Pos Abao, where the young woman was arrested.

Contrary to rumors circulating on Monday and Tuesday, the suspect was not released. She remains in custody and, on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, she is scheduled to appear before an Investigating Judge, who will decide whether her detention will be extended.

It has now been confirmed that the Public Prosecutor’s Office has formally requested the extension of her detention, citing the seriousness of the case and the ongoing investigation.

At the scene of the accident near the Renaissance Mall exit, chalk markings in blue and yellow remain visible on the roadway, indicating the exact point of impact and where various objects were found scattered.

Meanwhile, the Dominican community in Aruba continues to mourn the loss of the two victims. Many people who frequent local casinos knew the female victim, Jocely, and remember her as a warm, social, and joyful person, always known for her smile and sense of humor.
