ORANJESTAD (AAN): Prime Minister Mike Eman received the new President of the Common Court of Justice, Mr. Sigmar Carmelia, in his office on Monday. This courtesy visit marked his first official trip to Aruba following his appointment.
Mr. Carmelia was sworn in as President of the Common Court of Justice on May 11, 2026. Born in Curaçao, he has held various judicial positions and has served as a judge in the court since 2015, contributing to justice across the Dutch Caribbean.
The Common Court of Justice handles civil, criminal, and administrative appeals for Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. During the visit, the discussion focused on the importance of institutional cooperation and the role of a strong judiciary for the islands. Mr. Carmelia was accompanied by Martin Luttge, Director of Operations, and Kyra de Koeijer, Executive Secretary of the Court.
