ORANJESTAD — Aruba police officers were confronted with a dangerous situation during a traffic control operation conducted before and after the Flambeau Parade on January 4, 2026.
Motorized police units were carrying out routine traffic checks at the start of the parade, focusing on vehicle documentation and valid driver’s licenses. During the operation, officers detained eight drivers for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
While monitoring traffic on Laurens Costenstraat, officers observed a suspicious vehicle near a residence. As a motorized police officer approached the vehicle, the driver struck the officer’s motorcycle. Moments later, a passenger exited the vehicle and brandished a firearm, escalating the situation.
The officer immediately requested backup, prompting a search of the surrounding neighborhood. Police later located a suspect in the RCA area, where the individual again displayed a firearm before being arrested. Authorities confiscated the firearm as part of the investigation.
Police confirmed that in 2025, a total of eight arrests were made for driving under the influence of alcohol during similar operations.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
