Aruba is exploring a regional waste center that could serve Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao by combining material volumes for separation, recycling, processing and export.
Combined volumes could improve feasibility
Prime Minister Mike Eman discussed the concept with interim SELIBON director Edsel Winklaar during an official visit to Bonaire. One option under consideration is a facility in the industrial area of Aruba’s former refinery, according to 24ora.
Eman said the individual islands do not always produce enough of certain materials to make processing economical. Combining their volumes could make parts of the recycling cycle commercially practical.
Shipping would be part of the model
Participants also discussed dedicated container transport among the ABC islands. A regional shipping link could improve logistics and support related economic activity.
The proposal remains exploratory. Talks are expected to continue with partners in Curaçao and the Netherlands as officials assess environmental, operational and economic considerations.
