IPKO Agenda: Slavery, Monetary Union, Language

Parliamentarian Shailiny Tromp-Ley has outlined the agenda for the upcoming Tripartiet and IPKO meetings, highlighting key topics such as the slavery past and the challenges facing the monetary union between Curaçao and Sint Maarten.

In addition to discussing dispute settlement and meeting structures, the delegations will address the legacy of slavery. Tromp-Ley noted that discussions will focus on the formal apologies and promises made by the Netherlands, emphasizing the need for the three islands to present a unified front to demand structural reparations. The monetary union established in 2010 is also a critical topic, as it faces political tension regarding the governance of the Central Bank and the inability of nations to conduct independent monetary policies.

Tromp-Ley pointed out that Aruba’s autonomous monetary policy since 1986 offers valuable lessons for the other islands. Furthermore, the use of native languages, such as Papiamento, during meetings to ensure clarity and build trust will be debated.
