ORANJESTAD — The Government of Aruba has launched an interministerial taskforce Oranjestad aimed at breathing new life into downtown Oranjestad, with a focus on security, community coexistence, and urban development.
During a press encounter on Elleboogstraat, authorities explained that the initiative is part of a broader vision to transform abandoned areas into functional and attractive spaces. The taskforce includes representatives from multiple ministries and has set its sights on coordinating social, preventive, and security actions while developing a comprehensive plan for 2025–2027.
Officials emphasized that the effort will also involve collaboration with the private sector and social organizations to ensure a sustainable approach to the city’s renewal. The government highlighted that revitalizing Oranjestad requires a continuous process built on cooperation and community commitment.
A key example of the transformation already underway is the renovation of the former Music Box building, which has gone from a state of abandonment to a symbol of opportunity. According to the government, the project demonstrates that urban revitalization is achievable when stakeholders work together toward a common goal.
The taskforce’s ultimate mission is to create a safer, more humane, and more attractive city center — one that serves both residents and visitors while preserving Oranjestad’s unique character and heritage.
