ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Germany Uses Aruba as Humanitarian Hub for Venezuela Aid as the island continues to play a key role in the international relief effort following the powerful earthquake that struck northern Venezuela. Prime Minister Mike Eman, accompanied by Minister of Tourism, Transport and Labor Wendrick Cicilia, representatives of the Department of Civil Aviation, Aruba Airport Authority (AAA), and other officials, visited the German Air Force’s Airbus A400M Atlas currently stationed at Queen Beatrix International Airport.
Germany selected Aruba as a strategic logistics base to establish an air bridge supporting humanitarian operations in Venezuela. At present, two daily flights depart from Aruba carrying medical personnel, emergency equipment, and humanitarian supplies. The operation is scheduled to continue through July 2, after which the ongoing needs in Venezuela will be reassessed.
Prime Minister Eman said Aruba is honored to contribute to a mission focused on saving lives. He noted that Germany’s decision to use Aruba as its operational base demonstrates confidence in the island’s infrastructure and ability to support a large-scale international humanitarian mission.
During the visit, officials toured the Airbus A400M Atlas, which has been converted into a flying medical facility. The aircraft is equipped with six intensive care beds designed to transport critically ill patients. Eman praised the professionalism of the operation, highlighting the coordinated work of pilots, physicians, nurses, and technical staff dedicated to providing advanced medical care.
The Prime Minister also thanked the German commander, flight crews, medical personnel, and support teams for their humanitarian commitment. He expressed appreciation to the Department of Civil Aviation, Aruba Airport Authority, and other local agencies responsible for processing the permits required for humanitarian flights operating through Aruba.
In addition to supporting Germany’s mission, the Government of Aruba continues to process requests from aircraft and helicopters seeking permission to land on the island or use Aruba’s airspace while delivering humanitarian assistance to Venezuela. According to Eman, these efforts form part of broader cooperation between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and international partners responding to the disaster.
Eman also commended the people of Aruba for their overwhelming response to donation drives supporting Venezuela. He said the large volume of essential supplies collected reflects the compassion and solidarity of the Aruban community and thanked residents for helping make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected.
The Airbus A400M Atlas is a modern military transport aircraft developed by Airbus Defence and Space for logistics, humanitarian, and medical missions. In its current configuration, it functions as an airborne hospital with intensive care capabilities and a specialized medical team, allowing it to transport critically ill patients while operating from a wide range of airfields under challenging conditions.
