ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Family members of the victims who died in a fatal hit-and-run collision earlier this year have publicly responded to what they describe as inaccurate information published by certain local media outlets.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Yhoelly Willems said they decided to break their silence six months after the tragedy to clarify statements they believe do not reflect the facts surrounding the case.
Willems denied reports claiming the suspect’s family had contacted the victims’ relatives to express condolences or offer assistance with funeral expenses, stating that no such contact ever occurred.
She also disputed reports concerning the circumstances of the collision, including statements about where the victims crossed the road, the vehicle’s speed and the driver’s condition. According to Willems, the suspect recorded a breath alcohol level above Aruba’s legal limit, information she said should be considered when discussing the case.
The family said they had previously chosen not to comment publicly out of respect for the ongoing criminal investigation but decided to respond after recent interviews and media reports.
Willems also urged local media organizations to exercise caution when reporting on serious accidents, emphasizing the importance of accurate information and sensitivity toward grieving families.
