As Aruba seeks a sustainable economic future for the San Nicolas refinery site, a recent analysis suggests shifting focus toward the area’s potential as an international shipping hub. With the refinery account closed, the argument is that the existing port capabilities offer a more viable path forward than previous unrealized proposals for the land.
The article highlights that San Nicolas possesses the region’s most promising natural deep-water port. Unlike Barcadera, which struggles with silting and cannot accommodate larger vessels, San Nicolas does not face these limitations. Furthermore, Oranjestad is cited as unable to receive certain transport ships, making San Nicolas a strategic location for potential container transshipment facilities.
According to the analysis, global maritime shifts could increase the value of this asset. International shipping is exploring alternatives to the Suez and Panama Canals due to geopolitical risks, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and threats to the Red Sea. The report notes emerging options such as the “Corredor Interoceánico del Istmo de Tehuantepec”.
