ORANJESTAD – Employees of the Directie Arbeid en Onderzoek (DAO) have publicly raised concerns over their current working conditions, highlighting a stark contrast between Aruba’s international messaging on mental health, sustainable development, and labor rights, and the realities they face internally.
The DAO staff reported that all internal communication channels have been exhausted without response from the Ministry. Forcing their appeal public, they detailed issues including:
- Overcrowded, windowless, and poorly ventilated office spaces causing health risks such as Sick Building Syndrome, insomnia, anxiety, and decreased work performance.
- Historical mold problems and high humidity levels exacerbating respiratory risks.
- A strict top-down management approach preventing dialogue, with rigid deadlines and no input from employees on practical implementation or human consequences.
Staff emphasize that fundamental constitutional rights allow them to express concerns publicly when internal channels fail, and they call for immediate suspension of the relocation until a proper office space is provided. They stress the government should govern by example, providing safe and decent working conditions.
DAO personnel stress that they are not requesting luxury—only a structurally appropriate, healthy, and safe workplace to continue serving the Aruban community with dignity.
