Bonaire Parents Organize Meeting Over Education Crisis

The Bonaire Human Rights Organization (BHRO) and the parents’ association “Mayornan Preokupa” are organizing a community meeting for parents on Thursday, April 23, 2026, following confirmation that the Dutch Tweede Kamer will discuss BHRO’s formal complaint about the education crisis on Bonaire in parliament.

Parents with children in secondary education on Bonaire have expressed ongoing concerns about the Liceo and SGB schools for over five years. Complaints have been filed with school management, the ombudsman, the Dutch Ministry of Education’s department on Bonaire (OCW), and the local government—including the deputy—without producing results.

BHRO Intervention and United Nations Involvement

In mid-2025, after five years of unsuccessful efforts, a large group of parents formally petitioned BHRO, documenting fundamental problems in the education sector. These included serious local consequences, the exclusion of parents from participating in their children’s education, retaliation against teachers who raised concerns, and discrimination based on cultural and linguistic background.

BHRO intervened by engaging United Nations human rights mechanisms and reaching out to the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). The organization also worked to raise community awareness, helping parents understand their rights, formalizing complaints, and providing a platform for their voices. This strengthened collective action and empowered families who had previously struggled without support.

Historic Milestone at the United Nations

In September 2025, a BHRO delegation traveled to Geneva to attend hearings of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which was reviewing the seventh periodic report of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. BHRO presented Bonaire parents’ complaints directly to the Committee.

For the first time in history, UN experts posed questions to the Dutch delegation based on concerns raised by Bonaire’s civil society regarding the island’s education situation—placing these issues on the international agenda.

Dutch Government Response and Next Steps

The Dutch Ministry of Education has since acknowledged formal receipt of the complaint and is in communication with BHRO. Discussions are ongoing, including contact with the Fixed Committee for Education, Culture and Science, and the ministry has confirmed that the matter will proceed to the Tweede Kamer.

Thursday’s meeting will provide an update, clarify the current situation, and outline next steps, including discussion of the role and support of UN human rights mechanisms. Parents and community members are strongly encouraged to attend.

Meeting Details:

  • Date: Thursday, April 23, 2026
  • Time: 7:00 PM
  • Location: AFBW, Kaya Korona, Bonaire
