Aruba Government Takes Concrete Measures to Alleviate Poverty Vice President of Parliament, Muzaninn Wever

In an interview with DIARIO, the Vice President of Parliament, Muzaninn Wever, expressed his concern about the alarming reality of poverty in Aruba. According to the parliamentarian, although Aruba is in a better position compared to other Caribbean islands, it does not mean that everything is perfect. He emphasized the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 1: the elimination of poverty in all its forms.

The Vice President pointed out that Aruba faces a unique situation with a high GDP per capita, but it does not necessarily result in equal income distribution or benefits for the entire population. Wever stressed that the wealth of the country needs to be shared more equitably among all citizens.

He further remarked that when the AVP-Futuro party entered government, immediate efforts were made to address these issues. Some actions already implemented include pensioners receiving reparations, financial assistance for students for school fees, and a reduction in excise duties on gasoline.

Additionally, the government has planned national relief programs for 2026, with funding already allocated in the 2026 budget. These initiatives include targeted relief measures, such as reparations, housing subsidies for economically vulnerable groups, energy subsidies, and other forms of assistance for the population.

“I believe we are working to improve the financial position of our people. The Government of Aruba is taking real measures to alleviate poverty,” the parliamentarian concluded.
