Ombudsman Urges Safeguards in Aruba Private Care

Aruba private care facilities serving vulnerable residents need stronger safeguards, trained staff and accessible ways to report possible abuse or irregularities, Ombudsman Jurima Bryson says.

Concerns cover care and protection

Bryson raised concerns about safety, protection and the quality of care in private institutions that house older adults, people without housing and people dealing with addiction. According to NoticiaCla, the Ombudsman acted after receiving several reports and reviewing coverage of conditions in the sector.

The Ombudsman sent a letter to Social Affairs Minister M.G. Wyatt-Ras requesting attention to residents who depend on these institutions. The concerns are directed at the government’s responsibility for ensuring vulnerable people receive dignified, safe and humane care.

Staffing and oversight are central

Bryson highlighted the need for trained personnel, adequate supervision and compliance with applicable standards. She also called for reporting mechanisms that residents, relatives and others can use when they suspect abuse or other problems.

The statement does not identify individual facilities or establish misconduct at a particular institution. It sets out oversight and protection measures the Ombudsman believes are necessary across Aruba private care and shelter settings.
