ORANJESTAD (AAN): The MEP party has submitted a motion in Parliament urging the government to preserve parts of Aruba’s refinery as historical and cultural heritage.
The Aruba Refinery Heritage Protection proposal was discussed during a public meeting on April 16, focusing on the future of the refinery and concerns about possible dismantling.
According to MEP, the refinery has played a major role in Aruba’s development for over 60 years, contributing to economic growth, job creation, infrastructure, and the formation of communities.
The party expressed concern that plans to dismantle the facility may overlook its historical significance, stressing the need to safeguard its legacy for future generations.
The Aruba Refinery Heritage Protection motion calls on the government to ensure that key parts of the refinery are preserved and to explore options such as creating a museum or monument.
Additionally, MEP is requesting a clear plan outlining how cultural and historical preservation will be included in any dismantling process.
The Aruba Refinery Heritage Protection initiative highlights the broader debate on balancing economic development with preserving Aruba’s industrial history.
