ORANJESTAD:
Just five days into the new year, Aruba has recorded its first two traffic-related deaths of 2026.

On Sunday night at approximately 11:58 p.m., Police Central was notified of a hit-and-run accident on L.G. Smith Boulevard, near the Wind Creek Casino, where a black SUV struck two pedestrians and fled the scene.

Police patrol units and an ambulance were immediately dispatched with maximum urgency. Paramedics provided medical assistance to both victims at the scene, but tragically, both succumbed to their injuries.

Traffic specialists, a forensic doctor, and police technical investigators were present to begin the investigation. Victim Support Services also responded to provide assistance to the families of the deceased.

Search for the Vehicle and Driver

Police launched an immediate search for the vehicle involved. Shortly afterward, the SUV was located at a residence in Bushiri, where authorities detained a female driver.

At the scene, Dr. Voskuil officially pronounced the victims deceased. They were identified as:

  • Josely Paulina Vásquez González, born July 9, 1960, in the Dominican Republic
  • Carlos David Vialez Valerio, born October 19, 1971, in the Dominican Republic

This tragic incident marks the first and second traffic fatalities of the year in Aruba.

Hit-and-Run Emphasis

The Aruba Police Force strongly condemned the act of fleeing the scene after causing fatal injuries.

“This is unacceptable—striking people and fleeing the scene. These victims were human beings with families. Drivers must stop and remain at the scene of an accident and obey traffic laws to ensure road safety,” police stated.

NoticiaCla and the Aruba Police Force extend their deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
