Aruba Directorate for Kingdom and EU Relations:
ORANJESTAD (AAN): The Government of Aruba has officially opened the Directie Koninkrijksrelaties en Europese Unie (Directorate for Kingdom Relations and European Union), marking a strategic step toward strengthening ties within the Dutch Kingdom and with the European Union. The ceremony brought together local and international leaders, including Prime Minister Mike Eman, Minister of Kingdom Relations and European Affairs Gerlien Croes, European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Sikela, and Dutch State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Eddie van der Burg.

Prime Minister Eman emphasized that the opening of the new directorate sends a clear signal that Kingdom and EU relations have become a strategic priority for Aruba. He noted that the office will actively contribute to informing the community, developing policy, and creating new opportunities for the well-being of the Aruban people. According to the Prime Minister, international cooperation is not based solely on financial resources, but on the conviction that together, the islands and their partners are stronger than apart.

Minister Gerlien Croes expressed appreciation for the broad collaboration that made the initiative possible. She highlighted that re-establishing a dedicated office for Kingdom and EU Relations demonstrates vision and perseverance. She stressed that Aruba must position itself as an active and strategic partner within the Kingdom and European context, with a focus on sustainable development, innovation, and economic opportunity.

European Commissioner Jozef Sikela confirmed the EU’s commitment to Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), including Aruba. He acknowledged that while Aruba is part of the European family, the EU can still feel distant for many residents. The new directorate will serve as a direct point of contact for citizens, businesses, researchers, and institutions, facilitating access to European programs such as Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, Connecting Europe Facility, Digital Europe, and the European Solidarity Corps.

Commissioner Sikela stated that these opportunities, especially for young people, must be utilized to their full potential. He also announced efforts to expand and potentially double the budget available for OCTs in the next EU budget cycle, which would result in more resources, improved access, and a stronger partnership.

Dutch State Secretary Eddie van der Burg underscored that the meetings this week are not only about financing but about strengthening connections. He indicated that in a complex geopolitical world, cooperation is essential, particularly in areas such as connectivity, energy, and food security. He emphasized that the core value lies in connecting people, countries, and institutions, reinforcing the bonds between Aruba, the Netherlands, and the European Union.

The Government of Aruba considers the opening of the Directorate for Kingdom Relations and European Union a significant achievement and an investment in the country’s future. The initiative confirms an ongoing commitment to expanding international opportunities, strengthening Aruba’s strategic position, and building a stronger foundation for sustainable development.
