In a major announcement this week, Prime Minister Mike Eman, together with Minister of Public Health Drs. Mervin Wyatt-Ras, revealed a series of strategic increases to Aruba’s social assistance programs, specifically targeting vulnerable families who rely on bijstand (social aid).
The new measures are set to take effect with the start of the 2025–2026 academic year, aiming to provide much-needed relief for households facing financial challenges — especially those with school-aged children.
“Every school year brings additional expenses, from uniforms and supplies to transportation,” said Minister Wyatt-Ras. “These updates will help ensure that all children have an equal opportunity, regardless of their family’s income.”
Key Increases in Support Include:
School Allowance (Schooluitkering) Increase
The one-time annual school allowance will rise from AWG 220 to AWG 250 per child, with the household maximum increased from AWG 800 to AWG 1,000.
School Fee Contribution Boost
The government’s annual contribution toward school fees (schoolgeld) for families on social aid will be raised from AWG 120 to AWG 250 per child.
Monthly School Supplement (Schooltoeslag)
Families with children aged 3 to 24 who are enrolled in full-time education will now receive AWG 300 per child per month, up from the previous AWG 250.
General Bijstand Increase
The monthly bijstand payment for individuals and families will rise from AWG 450 to AWG 600 — a significant move reflecting current socio-economic conditions.
According to the Prime Minister, these increases are not just policy adjustments, but a critical step in addressing inequality.“We need to support those who need it most. This is about giving every family in Aruba the chance to grow and succeed,” Eman stated. The announcement has been well received by social organizations and education professionals who have long called for adjustments to better match the rising cost of living and educational expenses.
Through this initiative, the government reaffirms its commitment to equity, economic support, and brighter futures for all Aruban children.
