Aruba’s opposition MEP faction says it is preparing a no-confidence motion against Wever after a parliamentary debate over proposed changes to the National Ordinance on Standardization of Top Incomes, known as the LNT.
MEP challenges statements made during the LNT debate
According to Diario, Parliament met Tuesday at Finance Minister Geoffrey Wever’s request to discuss an amendment that would change compensation rules for directors of government-owned companies.
MEP alleges that Wever misled Parliament on three points during the discussion. The faction disputes his statements about an evaluation of the existing law, legal advice concerning favourable policy and whether an exception comparable to one used for local directors connected with Aruba Airport Authority could be applied. These are allegations made by MEP; the report does not establish them as independent findings.
Motion expected when the meeting resumes
MEP said a minister who deliberately misleads Parliament cannot retain its confidence and announced that it is preparing the motion for the continuation of the meeting. A vote has not yet been reported, and the proposal remains a stated intention by the faction.
The dispute adds a confidence question to an already contentious discussion about Aruba’s rules for senior public-sector compensation. Further action will depend on the resumed parliamentary proceedings and the exact motion placed before members.
