Aruba Sets Deadline for Abandoned Vehicles

VIEWS

Owners of abandoned vehicles in Aruba have until September 23 to remove them voluntarily from public roads and spaces before a coordinated removal operation begins.

Removal operation starts September 24

The Government of Aruba, the Aruba Police Force (KPA) and other agencies will begin removing vehicles identified as abandoned on September 24. The first phase will focus on Oranjestad, particularly the city centre and nearby streets.

Vehicle owners will be responsible for the costs connected with towing and the procedures that follow. Police Chief Ramon Arnhem said the KPA can investigate ownership even when a vehicle has no licence plate.

Authorities cite safety and sanitation concerns

Officials said vehicles left for long periods can affect the appearance of neighbourhoods and contribute to less safe and less hygienic conditions. Serlimar reported that abandoned cars can become collection points for other waste, which may attract pests and worsen conditions around nearby homes and businesses.

Oranjestad serves as the pilot area

The Oranjestad phase will be used as a pilot project. Authorities intend to evaluate the process before gradually expanding the abandoned-vehicle operation to other parts of Aruba.
