ORANJESTAD, Aruba — An Aruba slavery commemoration will take place Sunday, August 23, at Archivo Nacional Aruba to mark the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The commemorative activity will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will give residents an opportunity to reflect on the courage, resistance and struggles of enslaved people and freedom fighters throughout the Dutch Caribbean.

Organizers say remembering these stories is important for preserving cultural identity, understanding the region’s colonial past and inspiring future generations.

Caribbean Freedom Heroes to Be Remembered

The event is being organized by Archivo Nacional Aruba in cooperation with UNESCO Aruba and Fundacion Amigonan di Archivo, with support from the committee dedicated to commemorating the history of slavery.

A central part of the Aruba slavery commemoration will be recognizing freedom heroes associated with several Dutch Caribbean islands.

Among those highlighted will be Tula of Curaçao, Thico of Aruba, Martis di Catalina Janga of Bonaire and One-Tete Lohkay of Sint Maarten.

The program will also remember Thomas Dupersoy and enslaved leaders Abraha, Joseph, Prince, Oscar and Valentine from St. Eustatius.

Their stories represent different forms of resistance during periods when slavery and colonial systems shaped life throughout the Caribbean.

Exhibition and Video Presentations Planned

Visitors will be able to view an exhibition and video productions prepared in connection with the commemoration of the region’s slavery past.

The materials are intended to provide historical context while making the experiences and contributions of freedom fighters more accessible to the public.

The event will not focus only on remembering the past.

Organizers also plan to open conversations about contemporary issues connected to the legacy of slavery, including reparations and the possibility of establishing a special day dedicated to honoring Caribbean freedom heroes.

Participants will have an opportunity to discuss these topics and consider proposals for how Aruba can continue preserving and recognizing this part of its history.

International Day Observed on August 23

August 23 is internationally recognized as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

The observance provides an opportunity to remember the transatlantic slave trade and the resistance of enslaved people while promoting greater historical awareness.

For Aruba, organizers say the occasion also provides an opportunity to strengthen understanding of how slavery and colonialism affected the island and its Caribbean neighbors.

The Aruba slavery commemoration follows other initiatives held on the island in 2026 to increase public awareness of the history and legacy of slavery.

Preserving History for Future Generations

Archivo Nacional Aruba and its partners emphasize that honoring historical freedom fighters is important not only as an act of remembrance but also as a way of strengthening cultural identity.

Learning about those who resisted slavery can help younger generations better understand the struggles that shaped Caribbean society and the importance of defending freedom and human dignity.

The organizers are inviting the community to participate in the event and join the broader conversation about remembrance, recognition and historical justice.

The Aruba slavery commemoration will take place Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Archivo Nacional Aruba.
