Savaneta marine barracks canteen hygiene draws dutch parliamentary questions

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Conditions at the Savaneta Marine Barracks Canteen are facing scrutiny in the Dutch Parliament following reports of mould, pests and possible food-safety risks at the military facility in Aruba.

Maikel Boon, a member of the Dutch House of Representatives for the PVV, submitted written questions to Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius on August 3, 2026.

The questions were registered under parliamentary number 2026Z16638 and concern meal provision at Marinierskazerne Savaneta.

Parliamentarian Seeks Explanation From Minister

Boon asked whether the Defence Ministry is aware of reports that its occupational-health service identified serious shortcomings at the temporary dining facility.

He wants the minister to clarify when the department first became aware of the reported conditions and why military personnel allegedly continued working and eating in the facility.

Boon also requested information about measures introduced to ensure hygiene, workplace safety and safe food preparation while a permanent restaurant remains under development.

Reports Describe Mould and Pest Concerns

Investigative reporting by Follow the Money said Savaneta personnel have faced problems with their dining facilities for more than a decade.

The former restaurant was reportedly closed in 2022 ahead of planned renovation. A temporary facility was later established using a tent, generators and containers for cooking and dining.

According to the report, a Defence occupational-health inspection conducted in October 2025 identified mould in cooking and washing containers, moisture and condensation, pest traces and drainage problems.

Inspectors reportedly warned that continued food preparation under those conditions could create a risk of food-related illness.

These findings have not yet been addressed in a final parliamentary response from the Defence Minister.

Defence Disputes Food-Safety Problem

Follow the Money reported that the temporary tent was closed in early July 2026.

The Defence Ministry reportedly attributed the closure to a leaking drain and confirmed that pest-control services were used, while rejecting claims that a pest infestation or verified food-safety failure had occurred.

Meals were subsequently supplied by an external caterer. Defence reportedly expected the temporary facility to reopen near the end of August after corrective work.

The ministry’s formal response to Boon will be important in determining which reported deficiencies it accepts and which it disputes.

Questions Raised About Delayed Replacement

Boon also wants to know why funding for a new permanent restaurant was reportedly not released until June 2026, despite concerns dating back several years.

Follow the Money reported that the Rijksvastgoedbedrijf recently made funding available and that the tendering process was expected to begin.

The proposed restaurant was reportedly expected to open no earlier than the second quarter of 2027, provided the tender remains within the available budget.

No final construction date or completed procurement agreement has yet been publicly confirmed.

Hundreds of Personnel Depend on Meal Service

Approximately 250 marines are normally stationed at or supported through the Savaneta facility, according to the investigative report.

During exercises, that number can increase by roughly 150 visiting military personnel, placing additional pressure on food preparation and dining capacity.

The Aruba base forms part of the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Caribbean command structure, which maintains military facilities in Aruba and Curaçao and a marine detachment in Sint Maarten.

Boon Asks About Other Defence Locations

The parliamentarian’s questions extend beyond Aruba.

He asked whether other Defence locations have dining facilities or essential services that fail to meet applicable standards involving safety, hygiene and working conditions.

Boon is also seeking assurances that military personnel will receive facilities reflecting the risks and responsibilities connected to their service.

His questions do not themselves prove that the allegations are correct. They begin a parliamentary accountability process requiring the minister to provide an official explanation.

Ministerial Response Still Pending

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has served as the Netherlands’ Defence Minister since February 23, 2026.

At the time of publication, the parliamentary record listed Boon’s written questions but did not include the minister’s answers.

The response is expected to clarify the inspection findings, temporary meal arrangements, corrective measures, construction planning and whether comparable problems exist at other Defence facilities.

Until that response is published, the hygiene concerns surrounding the Savaneta Marine Barracks Canteen should remain presented as reported findings and allegations under parliamentary examination rather than as conclusions established by the minister.
