Aruba’s Directie Ouderenzaken says its dedicated elder abuse reporting point is in the final stage of preparation while participating agencies complete a cooperation agreement.
Agreement will define each agency’s role
Director Desiree Helder told DIARIO that the reporting point is intended to create a faster and more transparent process for handling signs or reports of abuse involving older adults. The agreement is being prepared so each organization understands its responsibilities and how to act when a report arrives.
The department can already receive reports and requests for guidance during office hours. In an immediate or severe danger, residents should contact police first.
Response depends on the type of case
The elder abuse reporting point will direct cases according to the circumstances. Family problems may involve the Department of Social Affairs. Cases involving psychiatric concerns or addiction may be referred to Respaldo or Stichting Hunto. Suspected crimes may go to police, while concerns about professional care can involve Aruba’s health inspectorate.
Helder said the department will continue following each case and stay in contact with the agencies involved. If an older adult cannot safely remain at home, authorities may treat the situation as a crisis and seek a care home, family placement or support from an organization addressing relational violence.
