Light Pollution Threatens Aruba Sea Turtle Nests

A recent investigation has revealed that Light Pollution Threatens Aruba Sea Turtle Nests, raising concerns among environmental experts about the future of several marine turtle species that nest on the island’s beaches.

The report, published by journalist Yorleny Oduber Quesada through Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism (CPI), examined how artificial lighting, coastal development, and human activity are affecting sea turtle nesting and survival rates in Aruba.

According to the findings, Light Pollution Threatens Aruba Sea Turtle Nests by confusing female turtles searching for nesting sites and hatchlings attempting to reach the ocean. Instead of following the natural reflection of moonlight on the sea, many young turtles become disoriented by lights from hotels, homes, roads, and other coastal infrastructure.

Data shared by Turtugaruba representative Richard van der Wal highlights a significant decline in nesting activity. Records show 72 leatherback turtle nests on Aruba’s east coast in 2008, compared to 27 nests in 2024 and 19 in 2025. Current figures for 2026 indicate that nesting numbers remain close to 20 as of June.

Environmental experts warn that Light Pollution Threatens Aruba Sea Turtle Nests alongside other pressures, including coastal construction, seawalls, and increased human activity near nesting beaches.

Marine ecologist Oriana Wouters emphasized that the challenge is cumulative, with fewer suitable nesting areas available each year. She also noted concerns that Aruba still lacks specific regulations to control artificial lighting during nesting season.

Director of Aruba’s Department of Nature and Environment (DNM), Gisbert Boekhoudt, confirmed that many beaches no longer provide the natural conditions turtles require for successful nesting. He explained that an interdepartmental group is currently working on a coastal management strategy that could eventually support stronger environmental regulations.

While initiatives such as turtle-friendly lighting systems and nest protection programs have produced positive results, experts agree that more comprehensive legal protections are needed. Light Pollution Threatens Aruba Sea Turtle Nests, and without stronger measures, the island’s sea turtle populations may continue facing increasing pressure in the years ahead.

Environmental organizations continue to encourage cooperation between government, businesses, and the community to balance tourism development with the protection of Aruba’s valuable marine ecosystems.
