Aruba Birdlife Conservation (ABC) has filed an urgent summary proceedings case against the Government of Aruba and the Aruba Conservation Foundation. The lawsuit seeks stronger protection for natural areas, including California Dunes, Tera Cora, Saliña Tierra del Sol, and parts of Arikok National Park, against environmental damage caused by UTVs and ATVs.
ABC argues that while these areas are protected under the Spatial Development Plan (ROPV), a lack of enforcement has turned them into a ‘Wild West’ for off-road vehicles. The organization states that despite repeated requests for authorities to intervene, little has changed.
The legal action follows increased public concern about the safety and environmental impact of off-road vehicles. This comes after a recent fatal accident near Black Stone Beach involving a UTV, which highlighted the risks associated with unregulated vehicle access in sensitive natural zones.
