Amber van Veghel Earns Doctorate
On Tuesday, April 21, Amber van Veghel successfully obtained her doctorate (PhD) from the University of Aruba in collaboration with KU Leuven in Belgium. Her multidisciplinary research focused on the environmental impact of food imports on the ABC islands, analyzing the CO2 emissions generated by the food supply chain.
Environmental Impact Research
Van Veghel’s research is particularly relevant given that food consumption accounts for up to one-third of global CO2 emissions. She examined the entire chain, from production to arrival on the islands, and calculated the specific emissions associated with air transport via passenger flights from the Netherlands to Aruba. Dr. Van Veghel noted that due to the islands’ dependence on imports, dietary choices by residents and visitors have a significant impact.
Thesis Availability
The thesis is the first to systematically inventory existing research on food in the ABC islands. It is available digitally for free and can be borrowed through the libraries of the University of Aruba and the National Library of Aruba.
