The Hidden Life Migrant Stories documentary will be presented next week at the University of Aruba, offering the community an opportunity to better understand the realities faced by migrants living in the Caribbean region.
The Hidden Life Migrant Stories documentary explores the emotional and difficult experiences of immigrants who are forced to live with uncertainty, fear, and long periods of separation from their homes and families.
Stories of Migrants Living in Uncertainty
The documentary shares real-life testimonies from migrants, including individuals such as a former soldier and an entrepreneur, who recount their dangerous journeys and the challenges they face living without stable legal status.
Many migrants must cope with serious difficulties, including:
-
lack of access to medical care
-
inability to obtain legal employment
-
fear of deportation at any moment
-
long separation from family members
These personal stories highlight the emotional and social impact of migration.
Focus on Venezuelan Refugees in the Caribbean
The Hidden Life Migrant Stories documentary focuses particularly on the situation of Venezuelan refugees living in Aruba and Curaçao. Due to the crisis in Venezuela, thousands have fled to the Caribbean islands in search of safety and better opportunities.
It is estimated that more than 23,000 Venezuelans currently live on Aruba and Curaçao, many of whom face legal and social challenges due to limited asylum procedures and restricted access to work and healthcare.
The documentary, created by filmmakers Martin Maat and Hans Hermans, runs approximately 68 minutes and features nine Venezuelan refugees from different backgrounds sharing their experiences publicly for the first time.
Their stories include dangerous journeys across the sea, detention experiences, labor exploitation, and the constant fear of being sent back to Venezuela.
Panel Discussion After Screening
Following the screening of the Hidden Life Migrant Stories documentary, a panel discussion will be held featuring three students from different faculties at the University of Aruba.
The students will share their own experiences and perspectives related to migration and discuss their work with immigrant communities.
