A 146 km/h driver was caught by police during a traffic speed control operation at Seroe Tijshi, raising fresh concerns about dangerous driving on Aruba’s highways.
Authorities worldwide recognize that high-speed driving significantly increases both the likelihood and severity of traffic accidents. When drivers exceed speed limits, reaction time is drastically reduced, braking distances become longer, and the force of impact during collisions increases. In the United States alone, speeding plays a role in approximately 29% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents.
In Aruba, several serious traffic accidents have been reported in recent days, with police indicating that excessive speed was a contributing factor in many of these incidents.
As a preventive measure to reduce accidents and improve road safety, the Aruba Police Force (KPA) intensified traffic controls across the island. On Friday night, February 20, 2026, the motorized police unit conducted a speed enforcement operation using radar equipment at Seroe Tijshi.
The results were concerning.
Police spokesperson Liliana Rasmijn confirmed that 44 drivers were fined for exceeding the legal speed limit. The most serious case involved a 146 km/h driver, who was clocked traveling at an extremely high speed. In past cases, drivers caught at such dangerous speeds have been required to appear before a judge.
Police issued a clear warning that speed controls will continue during this period. According to Rasmijn, the goal of these operations is not simply to issue fines but to prevent tragedies that could cost lives.
Authorities are urging drivers to respect traffic laws and remember that arriving safely is far more important than arriving quickly. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every driver has a duty to protect not only themselves but also others on the road.
