Hope for Change Lies With the Youth, Says FADA

ORANJESTAD (AAN):
The Foundation Anti Drug Aruba (FADA) continues its awareness campaigns against drinking and driving, with a strong focus on education and prevention. As part of these efforts, FADA has been visiting schools across Aruba with its Carousel program, which addresses the risks of alcohol use, particularly during the Carnival season.

Speaking to DIARIO, Rubiella Toppenberg of FADA explained that social media platforms are also being used to share information related to the awareness campaigns. In addition, the Bo Amigo Responsabel (BAR) initiative will be visible during Carnival events, including messages displayed on screens along parade routes.

“Awareness campaigns are there, and the information is available,” Toppenberg emphasized. “Ultimately, it is up to citizens to make responsible decisions and ensure they have a designated responsible friend to drive them home.”

Despite ongoing challenges, Toppenberg stressed that hope for real change lies with the younger generation. When FADA engages children through interactive programs such as Carousel and BAR, they show a strong understanding of the message being delivered. At the same time, children often share stories that are both eye-opening and concerning, highlighting how much they are already exposed to alcohol-related situations.

According to Toppenberg, because many young people witness the consequences of alcohol use and impaired driving at an early age, combined with continuous awareness efforts, they are more likely to grow into adults who choose responsible behavior.

This is already evident among young adults who received awareness messages as children and now consciously take turns acting as the Bo Amigo Responsabel (designated driver) when going out in groups.

Toppenberg concluded with FADA’s core message, especially relevant during Carnival season:
“If you drink, don’t drive.”
