ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The Department of Taxation (DIMP) continues to organize various workshops throughout the year to help guide and educate taxpayers, particularly small business owners and individuals who face difficulties using the tax portal or who do not fully understand documents written in Dutch.
This was explained by DIMP Director Luenne Gomes-Pieters in an interview with DIARIO. She stated that DIMP regularly collaborates with other departments such as the Department of Economic Affairs (DEACI) and Education for Employment, and has also worked with taxi drivers applying for new permits. Most recently, a workshop was provided to small contractors at DOW.
Gomes-Pieters encouraged small business owners not to be afraid of approaching DIMP. While failure to submit tax forms or pay taxes on time can result in penalties and collection measures, she emphasized that this should not discourage taxpayers from seeking information about their rights.
“Taxpayers have obligations, but they also have rights,” she stressed.
In cases where tax assessments are high due to late submission of forms, taxpayers have the legal right to file an objection. According to the director, inspectors are required to receive and process these objections and to review the income figures reported by taxpayers.
Gomes-Pieters acknowledged that DIMP is often perceived as a department that conducts enforcement actions and imposes fines on those who fail to comply. However, she emphasized that DIMP’s role is also to assist and guide taxpayers who struggle to understand the tax portal or tax-related documentation written in Dutch.
She further explained that DIMP provides guidance on a wide range of topics, including:
-
The differences between a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak), NV, and VBA
-
How to maintain proper administration
-
Which invoices must be retained
-
How to calculate payroll tax, income tax, BBO, and profit tax
According to Gomes-Pieters, DIMP’s technical staff have many years of experience and provide clear, detailed, and understandable guidance tailored to each taxpayer.
