Dutch Marines Assist St. Maarten in Reducing Violent Crime

As previously reported by DIARIO, violent crime in St. Maarten has increased significantly, with armed robberies and violent incidents occurring in public areas frequented by residents and visitors. These developments have raised serious concerns among the community and members of Parliament, prompting calls for immediate action and clarity from the Minister of Justice.

In response, Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling began coordinating with security partners across the Caribbean region, including Aruba, to explore ways to address the alarming rise in violent crime. St. Maarten also formally requested assistance from police forces of other islands within the Kingdom.

Following consultations with the Dutch authorities, it was decided to increase the deployment of the Dutch Marines (Korps Mariniers) already stationed in St. Maarten. Since Friday, December 12, marines have been actively supporting local police operations across the island.

The presence of the marines aims to maintain public order and enhance security, with authorities hoping the increased military visibility will deter criminal activity. Residents have expressed growing concern over the number of extreme cases recorded, making additional security measures necessary.

For an initial period of two weeks, the marines will conduct traffic controls and joint patrols alongside members of the St. Maarten Police Force. The Dutch Ministry of Defence emphasized that supporting civil authorities is part of its mandate within the Caribbean region of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Authorities also noted that St. Maarten is currently constructing a larger correctional facility to address capacity issues. However, the Minister indicated that several million Caribbean guilders will still be required to equip police and investigative units with the necessary tools to effectively combat and solve crime.
