On Wednesday, the Financial Investigation Bureau (BFO) of the Aruba Police Force carried out a targeted operation as part of an ongoing financial investigation known as “Caso Venkel.”

The raids were conducted in close cooperation with other police departments and the RST (Recherchesamenwerkingsteam). According to information obtained from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, authorities arrested four suspects and searched two houses (including one in Matadera) and three business locations, one of which is a soon-to-open ice cream shop in Shiribana.

During the operation, investigators seized several portable data banks, large amounts of cash, and multiple vehicles. The suspects are accused of laundering significant sums of money through cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrency (also known as “digital currency”) is money stored and transacted through a computer network without oversight from a bank. Because transactions often take place anonymously and across international borders, it becomes difficult to trace the origin of the funds.

This technology can be abused to move criminal profits out of sight of service providers or authorities, with the intent to disguise the illegal origins of the money. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, money laundering is one of the main pillars that supports criminal activity and undermines society.

Money laundering is not only a financial crime but also a driving force behind organized crime. Without the ability to use their illegal profits, criminals lose their primary motive: money.

For that reason, the fight against money laundering is not just about numbers on a bank account or computer—it is a battle against the entire infrastructure of the underground world. The Public Prosecutor works closely with multiple partners to combat money laundering effectively. Today’s action reinforces the message that criminal money flows, no matter how sophisticated, are never out of reach of the police.
