Parliament Member Eduard Pieters Reaffirms PPA’s Firm Stance on the Rijkswet Issue

During a press conference on Monday morning, Parliamentarian Eduard Pieters from the PPA (People’s Progressive Action) party reaffirmed his faction’s consistent and responsible position regarding the ongoing debate on the Rijkswet HOFA. Pieters described the matter as highly significant and reminded that ever since his colleague Otmar Oduber took office as a member of parliament, PPA has expressed its concerns. As early as January 30, the party had formally requested a Public Meeting to discuss the progress of the Rijkswet process.

Delay in Parliamentary Process
Pieters voiced disappointment that Parliament failed to convene a public session within the 30-day timeframe, as stipulated in the Rules of Order. In reality, it took more than seven months before such a meeting was finally held—only to be suspended after less than 15 minutes at the request of another party member.
“Despite this delay,” Pieters said, “the PPA’s stance has remained clear and firm.” He added that the party had met with union, business, and other key organizations in Aruba to hear their concerns and share the PPA’s position.

Ongoing Dialogue and National Consultation
Two months ago, the PPA faction submitted its Minority Report, which was also distributed to all relevant organizations both within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and in Aruba. Pieters expressed appreciation for other political parties that followed PPA’s lead by engaging in constructive discussions with trade unions and business groups.
“This is a process PPA initiated and will continue to strengthen,” he emphasized, noting that the Rijkswet carries serious implications for Aruba as a whole.

Invitation to Dialogue – October 27
The PPA has sent out an invitation to all union and business associations for a consultation session on Monday, October 27, at the ATIA building, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to:

  • Explain the PPA’s position and share the latest updates;
  • Encourage constructive dialogue; and
  • Gather additional input from involved sectors.

Two Options on the Table
“At this stage, there are two possible paths forward,” Pieters explained. “The first is for Parliament to approve the Consensus Rijkswet, and the second is to draft a report with a broad and solid foundation of public representation to be sent to the Tweede Kamer (Dutch House of Representatives) with the necessary amendments. If a majority in Parliament rejects the current version, the process will stop, and Aruba will have to start over.”
