ORANJESTAD (AAN): Aruba was saddened on Thursday by the unexpected passing of a well-known local entrepreneur, owner of the popular Chalo Burger establishments and a churrascaria restaurant. He passed away while in Colombia.

The entrepreneur, Gonzalo Antonio Soto, affectionately known as “Chalo,” was widely recognized as the always-smiling Colombian who became a beloved figure in Aruba’s culinary scene. Social, friendly, and passionate about food, Chalo quickly mastered the kitchen craft during his early years working at a well-known churrascaria in Palm Beach.

His first snack trailer, Chalo Burger, gained immediate attention for its unique approach to gourmet hamburgers. He later became especially famous for his hotdog buns topped with a signature pineapple sauce, a product that quickly became a favorite among locals. His success even earned him permission to sell along Carnival routes.

Another major hit was his Cali-style salchipapa, served with cornflake sauce and his signature pineapple sauce, a dish that went viral and attracted long lines of customers. His background in churrascaria also made him well known for his grilled meats, which earned a loyal following.

Chalo Burger expanded with multiple snack trailers across various neighborhoods, and in 2025, he opened a churrascaria at Wayaca Falls, which rapidly gained a strong customer base.

In recent years, Chalo faced health challenges due to diabetes, which led to kidney complications. After experiencing complete kidney failure, he underwent an organ transplant in Colombia, accompanied by dialysis treatments and anti-rejection medication. Sadly, he suffered unexpected complications and passed away on Thursday afternoon in Medellín.

Chalo Soto will be remembered as a friend to everyone and a respected employer admired by his staff. His family has announced that the businesses will continue operations, honoring Chalo’s wish to maintain successful establishments that offer quality food to their customers.

DIARIO extends its deepest condolences to his daughter Valentina, family members, and friends during this difficult time.
