Candelario Wever Criticizes Waste Management

Candelario (Booshi) Wever, a member of the UPP party, has strongly criticized former minister Otmar regarding waste management policies in Aruba. Wever accused the former minister of corruption and mismanagement, citing the lack of a consistent policy since the end of 2009.

Historical Context of Waste Management

Wever recounted that in 2001, the government successfully tackled the waste problem, stopping open burning at Parkietenbos by May 1, 2002, and converting the dump into a sanitary landfill. He contrasted this with the situation in 2017, when he claims corruption and wasted money became normalized.

Allegations of Corruption

According to Wever, the issues included renting facilities from sponsors and awarding million-dollar contracts to associates. He specifically mentioned the purchase of a small incinerator from a sponsor that he alleges does not work. Wever asserted that these actions have led to the current failures in waste management.
